Deck FAQS

What height can you build a deck to without the need for a handrail/balustrade?

Legally you can build a deck up to 1m off the ground without the need for a handrail but if the deck will be used by small children you may want to install one even if the drop is less than a meter, for peace of mind.

What height can you build a deck to without needing consent?

You can build a deck up to 1.5m above ground without needing a consent.

Can you build decks over concrete?

Yes, we can build decks over the top of existing concrete.

How often should I stain my hardwood deck?

To maintain the colour of your hardwood deck, it should be stained/oiled once a year.

Which decking material requires the least maintenance?

Composite and millboard will require the least amount of maintenance, as they tend to keep their colour and do not rot like timber does over time.

What decking material should I use?

Choosing the right decking material for your project comes down to budget, how hard wearing you need it to be, how much maintenance you are willing to do and the general look you are wanting to achieve. Most of the options below are available in 90mm and 140mm wide boards, 140mm being the most commonly used these days.

Most common materials in NZ:

Pine: The most cost effective solution if there is a tight budget for the project. Pine can be painted or stained any colour to give a variety of finishes. The disadvantage of pine is it is a softwood, so can move a lot with the weather. The boards may be tight together in the winter but open up in the summer.

Kwila: A Kiwi favourite. Known for its redish brown colour, which silvers off over time. It is a hardwood which has minimal movement, great for the harsher conditions. It does come at a price which is a fair bit more than pine, so this has to be considered depending on your budget. Kwila does leach its colour when it is first laid, so this is something to be mindful of if the deck is joining into some concrete such as a driveway, as it may stain the concrete.

Garapa: Another great hardwood option. Garapa is a light honey gold colour when first laid, that if left will also silver off over time. A similar price to Kwila, Garapa doesn't leach its colour like Kwila does.

Vitex: Also a hardwood similar in price to Kwila and Garapa, Vitex is a yellowy colour when first laid, a little lighter than Garapa. Silvers off over time.

Composite: Made up from a combination of wood fibers and plastic, this decking is low maintenance with no staining or oiling required. Available in a range of colours and price is generally slightly more than the hardwoods listed above.

Millboard Decking: Wood-free, plastic-free mineral composite decking, 176mm or 200mm wide boards gives an extra solid look. Millboard doesn't warp or rot and is very low maintenance. Available in a variety of colours and finishes, from a driftwood look, to antique oak, millboard decking stands out as something different. A bit more expensive than standard composite decking but may be a good option if you have the budget and want a hard-wearing low maintenance option that stands out from the rest.
